How to Conquer Bathroom Mold
Bathroom mold and mildew is a common problem for most homeowners. It is impossible to keep mold spores out of your home, and all they need to grow is water and a source of food. The high humidity found in a bathroom provides an ideal medium for mold growth.
The first weapon in your arsenal against bathroom mold is a dehumidifier. A small one that will handle just the bathroom will go a long way toward preventing mold and mildew.
Next, make sure that you keep up the required maintenance. Apply new caulking when needed and fix any drips or leaks. Water will seep into cracks behind walls or trim, and mold can grow unchecked in these hidden areas. Check around showers and tubs after use to identify any areas that pose a problem and therefore offer a potential haven for mold spores.
Bathroom mold will also thrive in areas where the exhaust fan is not vented to the outside. Some exhausts actually vent to the space between the interior and exterior walls. This leads to the growth of mold in an area you might not suspect. If the exhaust fan is properly vented, always run it during and immediately after a shower or bath to remove as much humidity from the room as possible.
Although many professional cleaners swear that chlorine bleach is the best way to clean bathroom mold, there are a number who disagree, preferring a boric acid solution instead. To make one gallon, mix 2 quarts of water, 1 quart of white vinegar, 1 quart of 35% hydrogen peroxide, and 1 cup of boric acid. Spray on the bathroom mold and let dry for about twenty minutes.
Don rubber gloves to avoid touching the mold and wear a face mask and safety glasses to keep spores from being inhaled. Using a stiff brush, scrub the area completely, wait a few minutes, and then spray it again with the boric acid solution. If the mold reappears, you may need to replace the area that is infested.
The boric acid solution also works well on mold that has taken root in the grout of your tile. You may need to use a smaller brush to really get into the smaller space between the tiles. While some people use bleach, this usually does not kill the mold, it just makes it invisible to the naked eye.
Shower curtains are another major problem when it comes to bathroom mold. To help prevent it, you might want to keep a spray bottle on hand filled with boric acid solution. Spray the shower curtain after each use, then arrange it so that it can dry quickly. Never let a shower curtain remain in standing water.
If you have mold growing on your bathroom walls, you may also have a growth behind the wall. Sometimes a small leak can cause the problem, or an improperly vented exhaust fan. If the area of mold is large, you might want to consider hiring a mold removal professional to deal with your bathroom mold problem.
