Best Tips for Mold Removal
Mold in the home is hazardous to your health. At best, it can trigger allergies ranging from watery eyes to sneezing. For those with asthma, this can lead to serious problems. At its worst, some types of mold can kill, especially those who are young or the elderly. Yet mold removal is not as simple as the household cleaners' ad agencies would have you believe.
Most cleansers remove only the mold that is on the surface and do not kill the spores. The unsightly patches will soon return. Some cleansers do not even provide any mold removal at all, merely a bleaching of the spores so that you do not notice them.
The best way to kill mold is with a boric acid solution. To make a gallon of the solution, use three quarts of water, one quart of hydrogen peroxide (35%) and one cup of boric acid. Some professionals recommend substituting one quart of white vinegar for one of the quarts of water.
Spray the boric acid solution onto the mold or apply with a roller or brush. Allow it to dry for at least 15 minutes and then scrub the area thoroughly with a brush. Afterwards, apply another spraying of boric acid to prevent the mold's return.
The Environmental Protection Agency recommends that you always wear gloves, a respirator, and protective eyewear for mold removal. Never let it come into contact with your bare skin, and never inhale the mold spores.
If possible, seal the affected area with a clear varnish after mold removal has been accomplished. If this is not possible, keep a close eye on the area. Sometimes the mold has become so deeply rooted in the wood or drywall that it is necessary to replace the material.
Porous materials, such as carpeting and acoustic tiles, are usually not good candidates for standard removal methods. Most often, these types of materials will require replacement since the mold spores will hide in the tiny spaces.
Effective mold removal also requires that you eliminate the source of the water that the mold is using for growth. Without moisture, the mold spores cannot grow. It is impossible to eliminate all spores from the environment; instead, you must eliminate what it needs to grow.
Never try to just paint over mold. The mold will actually feed on the paint, making it peel and leaving you with yet another ugly blotch. Nor will primers or treatments designed to mask water stains help with mold. It is crucial that you first kill and then remove the mold before painting.

You might also wish to consult a professional for valuable or treasured items that have been afflicted with mold, since different materials can require careful handling to avoid damage.
